Species information

Interest
The name heterophyllus refers to the different leaf forms produced by the saplings (with one or two pairs of lobes) and the adult (unlobed). The Jackfruit comes from W.Ghats, where it has been cultivated for millenia, called nangka in Samnskrit. The English name "Jack" is derived via Portuguese from a southern Indian word meaning round .. In Indian, bags may be placed over half ripe fruits, this envourages ants to swam over it, which in turn keeps away other insects (. Fruits of 110lb have been recorded, although 40lb is more normal. The 'mawkishly sweet and mousy' taste is due to ehytl-butyrate . IT is used in curries, sun-dried chips, pickle or boiled. The seeds boiled, with the water removed once or twice to remove the odour, are said to be very plesant, like chestnuts. A Saffron dye from wood is used for Buddhist robes (Burkill, 1935).
