Species information
DescriptionCystoliths on lower side of leaf form an irregular zig-zag pattern. Stems 4-sided. Petioles winged.
InterestRuellia - honour of Jean Ruel (1474-1537), herbalist to Francois I of France. A local name 'heartbush" in the Cayman Islands refers to use of its roots in medicine for heart disease (Proctor 1984). In grenada, a tea from a shoot, pflowrs and 6-8 tubers are uised to treat colds, fevers and hypertension (Politi, 1996).
