InterestThe wide dirty yellow sapwood surrounds a yellow-brown to dark chocolate-brown heartwood. This is extremely hard and heavy (1025 kg/m3) with a fine even texture, and difficult to work. Because of ripples in the grain the wood is difficult to finish by hand. The heartwood is durable and resistant to attack, but less so when in contact with the ground. Susceptible to attack by fungi. It is a stable wood, free of seasonal movement, and has been used for structural work, heavy joinery and large items of furniture, as well as in farm construction (Timberlake et al 1999, Wickens et al 1995).
Other NotesSpecies characteristics : A medium to large tree reaching heights of over 20 m., with a strightish stem and a rounded crown. The species is very variable in leaflet size and shape, which are the main characters for distinguishing the two subspecies. Brenan (1970) suggests that the range of variation in subspecies goetzei may be due to hybridisation and introgression has occured between subspecies microphylla and A. nigrescens. Both taxa occur in a wide range of wooded grassland and woodland types, on heavy soils but also on sandy alluvium.
