Common names: Kenya: Gamar (Somali), Mgunga (Swahili), Oldebe (Masai); Tanzania: Mgunga (Kiswahili), Mlelavana (Kig.), Mlelawato (Kis.). Species characteristics : This species grows either into small multistemmed obconical shrub to 2-3 m tall in southern Africa, very low spreading shrubs to 1.5 m on waterlogged black clays in the Kenyan highlands, larger shrubs to small trees to 7 m in the rest of its distribution. Young shoots and its pods are usually covered with long shaggy golden hairs which later become white. Occurs in wooded grassland and bushland, often on low lying areas with heavy alluvium, and in old fields abandoned possibly due sodicity. Also believed to be indicator of saline soils, and will occur on the margins of mangroves. Its disjunct distribution between east and southern Africa is notable.
