Species information

Interest
Occasionally used as firewood and charcoal in the Sahel. It has also been used for making tool handles. It is a palatable browse species, young pods and leaves eaten by goats, antelope and horses (Wickens et al. 1995). This species does not produce gum in any quantity. A resistent bast fibre is obtained from the long roots. Flowers are a pollen source for bees. A bark decoction is used by the Gourmantches to treat diarrhorea and dysentary in children.The bark extract is toxic to snails that are vectors for the dehabilitating desease bilhartzia.

Other Notes
Common names: Ghana: Gosenga (Nabdam). Species characteristics : Shrub or small tree to 5 m high, occasionally as tall as 8-9 m. It is very closely related to A. senegal and with 3 prickles belongs to the Acacia senegal complex. Widespread in west Africa, it occurs on sandy soils in open savanna.Tends to occur in moister sites than A. senegal, and is distinguished from it by having more pinnae and leaflet pairs. Produces a gum and is also browsed by animals. Distribution: Burkina Faso (Hauts Bassins); Cameroon (Benoue, Diamare); Ghana (Yendi, Northern); Ivory Coast ; Mali (Segou, Kayes, Sikasso, Bamako); Nigeria (Oyo, Kishi, Ilorin, Bauchi, Adamawa, Muri, North East, Kwara, Niger); Senegal (Kaolack, Tambacounda); Togo; Dahomey (Nord Ouest).
