Species information

Description
Diospyros in the Ebony family; two species recorded for the Lesser Antilles. Deciduious tree to 10; Lf blades oblong, 3-18cm long, Apex and base rounded, margin rolled round, drying dull grey. 1cm calyx lobes. D. i. Recorded officially in Trinidad, northern S.America, and only Tobago Cays and Bequia within the L.A. However, first recorded in 2002 in dry forest at Levera N.P. . Distinguishable from D. revoluta, the other L.A. Diospyros, by 3 leafy calyx lobes below the fruit, fruit 1-2cm diam. D. inconstans 4-6 thick triangular lobes, fruit 5cm diam. D. revoluta (Hispaniola to St. Lucia).

Interest
Diospyros is derived fro the Greek works for Godly and grain of wheat.

Along road to mangroves about 1 km from park entrance.

Notes
Tree 8 m tall. BARK: grey, smooth. SLASH: hard, thin, damp, outer layer black, inner layer orange-yellow, sapwood white. LEAVVES: new flush just breaking bud. FRUIT: red-brown, mature.
