Species information

Description
Flowers with 5-7 petals. Leaves entire, fleshy. Fruits 4.5-8 mm diam, smooth crowned by several stigmas. Bark smooth, with crease-like horizontal ridges and lenticels; cut bark yellow-orange, fibrous with gritty bits, not scented, darkening.

Interest
Ilex - from the Latin name for holm oak (Quercus ilex). Yerba mate tea is derived from the leaves of Ilex paraguariensis, a native South American shrub in the holly family (Aquifoliaceae). It belongs to the genus Ilex, along with several native North American species of holly.

Tree 10 m tall. BARK: smooth, white, abundant lenticels <1mm diam. SLASH: brittle, outer layer green, inner layer yellow with orange grit, no scent. LEAVES: fleshy, small sharp teeth, margin recurved; US slightly channelled; LS midrib prominant at base. FLOWERS: white. (RHS colour code: Leaf upper =147A, below=138B)
