The Botanic Garden and Arboretum curate a comprehensive collection of temperate and tropical ferns. Much of the collection is verified and is used in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
The collection comprises of 11 orders, 23 families, 50 genera, 100 species and 40 cultivars. 40 accessions are held in the Arboretum collections, 32 of which are species and the remainder cultivated varieties. 170 accessions are held in the Gardens' collections, 50 of which are species and the remaining 120 are represented by 40 cultivated varieties, many of which are Victorian cultivars. 60 accessions are held in the Glasshouse collections.
The 17 unrepresented fern families are all warm temperate to tropical in range.
