Species information

Description
Smaller palm than Euterpe dominicana, 3-15m tall (sometimes tufted). Stem swollen at base, up to 20cm diam. Many leaf scars. Leaves 1-3.5m long; Leaflets rigid, spreading , flat, dark green. Crownshaft shorter than infl bracts, splitting opposite petiole, with dense scales towrds top. Leaflets ?meeting up across rachis?

Interest
Most noted for their ornamental value. The young bud/leaves or 'cabbage' is edible, but this kills the trees.

Notes
Small palm, mostly 1-4m tall here. This specimen with stem only 1m long, leaves 1.5m long; infl. axes red, fts very black.
