Species information

Description
Axillary spines 1-5cm long on some nodes. 1-2 (-4) pairs pinnae. achis ending in a 3mm spine.

Interest
Prosopis - Greek name for Burdock! Widely planted as an ornmental and for land reclamation, tolerant of very poor even saline or alkaline soils, but can become a bad weed. Can become almost 5cm diam. and 4m high x 5m wide crown in 2 years (in Brazil, Hanum & Van der Maesen, 1997). Good for charcoal and furniture, and yields an amber gum similar to gum arabic. The pod are good protein and sugar-rich fodder, sometimes eaten also by people. A tea from the pods is said to be good for digestive complaints.
