Species information
Description1-3 pairs leaflets, common stalk sometimes winged. Fts 3cm, seed up to 2cm diam with acidic edible white aril.
InterestMelicoccus - from Gk meli, honey, and kokkos, berry; allusion to the sweetness of the fruit. The 2" fruit is greenish yellow when ripe and is edible.The white aril which covers the hard stone is what's eaten. The flesh inside the hard stone can also be eaten raw or roasted as a pea nut.
