Species information
DescriptionPlanted tree with conspicuous red flowers. A Medium-sized, fluted, deciduous tree conspicuous in secondary vegetation, e.g. along roadsides, by virtue of the red flowers (also in {Bombax}).
InterestSpathodea - from Gk spathe and odes, of the nature of. An allusion to the spathe-like calyx. An African tree distributed around the tropics as an ornamental in the 19th Century, via Europe . The flowers open at 4 a.m. The corolla emerges from the calyx during the preceding afternoon and gradually swells, straightening its wrinkles and exhaling the pleasant musang smell during the night (Corner, 1988). The winged seeds are said to be more or less edible. The wood is light and used for objects like blacksmith bellows or drums. The Bark or leaves can be used as ulcer or wound dressing. "The large calyx in bud holds sweet watery matter which children exploit by squirting into each other's eyes". Where it flourishes in forests the soil is regarded as good for forests. (Dalziel, 1948)
