Species information

Description
Distinguished from S.macrophylla by having smaller leaves (<25cm long) and smaller leaflets (all <10cm long and mostly <3cm wide).

Interest
G.van Swieten was and 18th Century Dutch physicist. The timber has been known in Europe from the earliest days of transatlatinc trade, as the mahogany was widely favoured for the repair of ships. It is termite resistant and excellent for furniture. The (bitter) bark is used to treat fervers, malaria, jaundice and biliousness (Politi, 1996).
