DescriptionDioecious trees to 30m; bark with large scales falling to leave patchwork of colours; twigs with long terminal bud; ochrea falling v. quickly; Leave asymmetric at base, decurrent (?or cordate on shade leaves); 12 to >20 pairs laterals, up to 45cm; folded up slighly around midrib; Finer venation visible on both surface, with tufts of hairs in nerve axils and hairs on midrib.Trunk fluted and irregular, bark v. scaly. Fruits white, 3-wined.
InterestTriplaris - from Gk triplex, triple. Parts of the flower in threes. Often colonised by ants (Fournet).

LocationAnnandale waterfalls area, by water.
Notesc. 20m tree at stream edge below waterfall, with large leaves; slender, hollow at base between butts. 3 winged fruits. Leaves folded up / boat-shaped, the spikes tending to lie in the 'hollow' thus created. Twigs hollow. APical buds c. 10cm long, yellowish, like a Ficus or Irvingia bud. 2 male trees downstream are smaller.
