Species information

Description
Tree to 10m; blades 3-10cm x 2.5-6, elliptic to almost round, apex often notched, base slightly cordate; veins prominent. Flowers fragrant; petals 2-3 x 1-1.5cm greenisyh or white; filaments 4-10cm long; fruits slightly flattened, not cylindical, c. 7-20cm long x 1.5-3cm.

Lance aux Epines peninsula, rd to Prickly Point.

Notes
Small tree with a round crown to 5m ht. Leaves plastic texture, very translucent, slightly recurved margin, emarginate, lower surface 144A but with darker veins, upper surface slightly V-shaped, slightly pitted, midrib golden yellow. Fruits pendulous mid olive green, dihiscent along one suture, then twisting to reveal bright crimson fleshy endocarp; unripe pods cut open like nougat - bright pink with green seeds. Locally common in dry coastal scrub forest with Haematoxylon, Acacia, Bourreria, Leucaena and Bursera. (RHS colour code: Leaf upper =144A, below=143A)
