Species information

Description
Shrub or large tree, often with many aerial roots; stipules 5-30mm long; very variable in shaoe and size (e.g. 2 or 20 cm long!). A very variable species, including many forms known previously by other names. leaf base usually rounded or cordate, Stipules 5-30mm. Figs 6-12mm diam in pairs leaf axils, stalks 2-6mm; red or yellow, often with red spots.

Interest
The island of Barbados, meaning bearded or alnd of beards, is said to derive its name from the beard-like aerial roots of this species. for this species grows well in dry lowland and coastal situations, and capable of making the fringe of an island look bearded.

On rim of crater lake along path to Mount Qua Qua.

Notes
Tree 14 m tall, 35 cm dbh, with low plank buttresses and crooked bole. BARK: smooth, reddish. SLASH: thin, brittle, white and pink, no latex. LEAVES: coriaceous, margin recurved; US midrib slightly prominant, secs slightly impressed; LS midrib and secs only slightly raised, tertiaries darker green; latex in petiole. FIGS: yellow-red with red spots, imm. (RHS colour code: Leaf upper =137A, below=146B)
