Species information

Description
Leaves alternate, bunched at twig tips. Flowers whit with yellow centre. Leaves bullate, strongly recurved margin.

Interest
Plumeria - honour of Charles Plumier (1646-1704), French Franciscan monk, botanist and tarveller. Visited Martinique, Guadeloupe and Haiti in 1689 and 1690. The flowers are used in garlands in Hawaii, and as offerings in Buddhist temples. The latex has been used to treat warts.

Location
La Sagesse Nature Trail, Marquis Point, peninsula E of La Sagesse beach.

Notes
Small low-branching shrubby tree to 4m ht. Twigs to 2cm broad at tips, rubbery with copious white latex from cut twigs and leaves. Leaves: very recurved margin and extremely bullate; upper surface - slightly glossy; lower surface - all veins visible. Flowers - corolla white with a yellow centre; slightly scented. Fruits green, tinged maroon. Locally common on windswept headland, not seen elsewhere. (RHS colour code: Leaf upper =138A, below=138B)
