Interest
Produces an edible gum, eaten by bushmen (Wickens et al 1995).

Common names: Angola: Mangajaba (Cuanhama); Botswana: White thorn (English); Zambia: Mukona (Chi Lozi), Mukona (S. Kwale); Zimbabwe: blade thorn (English). Species characteristics : Multistemmed shrub or tree to 10 m high, with a rounded canopy. A medium altitude species, it occurs in mixed deciduous woodland to scrub. A shallow rooted species, on coarse sandy colluvial or alluvial soils. Frequent on Kalahari sands, where it can indicate disturbance or fire. It can form thickets on sandy banks close to rivers. It is closely related to A. erubescens from which it can be confused, and is distinguished by having shorter petioles (less than 1.5cm), large squat petiolar gland, no glands between pinnae pairs, more pinnae pairs and smaller leaflets. With two hooked prickles and a spikate inflorescence belongs to subgenus Acacia.
