Species information
Other NotesSpecies characteristics : Medium to large tree to 20 m, often with a spreading canopy. A low altitude species, it is split into 2 subspecies. Subspecies delagoensis is restricted to the eastern side of the continent, being restricted to river valleys below around 400 m., and is likely to be frost intolerant. Common on alluvial soils, it has also been found around pans and on heavier soils in association with mopane. The other subspecies (welwitschii) is confined to Angola, and has a larger inflorescence and larger leaflets. This species is closely related to A. goetzei and A. burkei, and differs from A. goetzei in having elliptic leaflets which are almost symmetric at their bases, and narrower pods with larger areoles on the seeds. Common names: Mozambique: Namuno (Macua).
