Description
Tree to 20m bark smooth, with slight horizontal hoops; straight-edge buttresses; Stipules up to 4cm long; leaves oblong, entire or serrated, 7-20cm long, acuminate.

Interest
Gk, brosimos, edible. Timber tree, producing fruits like chestnuts. A related species is the cow tree in Venezuela, whose latex is drunk. Local names include Cow tree and Milk tree, as well as breadnut. When boiled, the seed (nut) is edible. It was an important food crop for the Mayans.
