InterestThe timber of some species is known as surette. or serette The globose fruits, which mature in the autumn and winter, reach a diameter of up to I inch (2.5 cm), and contain 3 seeds. The juicy pulp is too acid for eating out of hand but can be used to make jelly or jam.

NotesTree 14 m tall. BARK: pale grey, rough, with 'eyes' at old nodes and horizontal ridges every 20-40 cm and flat longitudinal lenticels 10 x 2 mm. SLASH: soft, spongy, fibrous, orange-red with yellow vertical strands, smell sweet like cane-sugar. (RHS colour code: Leaf upper =146A, below=147B)
