Species information
DescriptionTree to 30m with umbrella crown; 2-4 (rarely 6) pairs oinnae with 3-12 pairs leaflets, each 8-25mm long (or up to 6cm long on shade leaves and saplings), with a round gland between each pair pinnae, Flower heads umbrella-like brushes, or hemispherical, pinkish and white. Pod rolled round, slightly constricted between the seeds. c. 8cm x0.8-1.5cm if unrolled.

NotesSmall tree with a short clear bole to 4m ht, then heavy branching and a spreading open crown, some dieback on lower shaded branches. Bark orange-brown, smooth, very lenticellate. Slash slight smell of tobacco, slightly gritty, green under bark (164C). Leaves: upper surface glossy; lower surface glaucous; younger leaves yellower, buds covered with dense orange-brown indumentum; glands between all pinnae pairs. 'Flowers white' 'Sap blown from cut root section forming foaming bubbly soap-like spume which is used to invigorate hunting dogs when applied to nose'. (RHS colour code: Leaf upper =141A, below=139D)
