Species information

Description
15m tree; stipules 3-4mm but only on apical bud; leaf blade 5-15cm, shiny with recurved margin.

Interest
The rather strong-smelling bark, dropped in a bottle of rum is a reputed local aphrodasiac This Infusion of root-bark is powerful but dangerous. There were stories when men have overdosed and suffered serious consequences whereby their penis had to be iced to bring down the erection. There were other cases when they were hospitalized.

Tree 12 m tall, 30 cm dbh. BARK: rough with numerous small protruding lenticels. SLASH: soft, fibrous, outer layer green, inner layer cream. LEAVES: leathery; US midrib channelled; LS secs prominant to just over half length. (RHS colour code: Leaf upper =137A, below=146B)
