Notes
Rd 3km N from Teotitlan del Camino to Tehuacan, lower Tehuacan Valley, on Oaxaca/Puebla state boundary. Medium-sized tree with a small rounded crown to 10m ht. Bark light brownish grey, smooth, inner bark green then deep blood red. Leaves mature and young flush, petiolar gland green. Ripe and unripe pods, yellow green, turning mid orange brown when ripe, in clusters of up to 30 per flower head. Common throughout the lower Tehuacan Valley, cultivated for the edible seeds which are consumed locally and marketed in Tehuacan and as far away as Mexico City. Associated species include Leucaena esculenta, Senna atomaria, Prosopis laevigata and Acacia pringlei.
