Species information

Description
Large tree to 25m; bark fairly smooth. Petiole with a flat gland near the middle. 4-15 pairs pinnae; 20-30 pairs leaflets, 8-15mm long, paler below. Flowers in balls on 14-40mm peduncles; Many stamens, joined at base. Pod more or less flat, but spongy within, twisted into a circle

Interest
Enterolobium, from Greek for lobed intestines, referring to the curled pods.

Location
Rio Zimatan, 500m S of the ford between Santa Maria Xadani and Petatengo.

Notes
Very large tree to 30m ht and >1m dbh with heavy branching and an enormous spreading umbrella crown. Outer bark mid grey-brown with sinuous vertical ridges. Slash hard, gritty, thick, orange. Young flush leaves. Flowers on lax capitula; calyx and corolla pale green, stamen filaments white. Ripe indehiscent glossy dark brown pods like 'ears'. Common along rivers in selva baja with Andira, Homalium, Haematoxylon and Ceiba.
