Species information

Interest
In Ethiopia and Somalia the species is browsed by goats and camels. The nearly ripe seeds are reputed to be edible, cooked or raw. Because of the very low flat crowns this species provides soil protection from wind erosion and trampling (Wickens et al. 1995)

Other Notes
Common names: Somalia: Cherin (Somali), Gulu (Somali), Jerin ad (Somali). Species characteristics : Low flat topped spreading shrub to 3 m but often as low as 0.5 m , sometimes like a flat 'table top.' Young branches are covered in dense hairs, and the pods are thick woody and tomentose with blackish seeds. This a very variable species which grows into different forms in different habitats. There is a completly prostrate mat forming coastal form, previously named A. humifusa. There is also a form which grows into a small tree to 5 m tall with curved flattened pods. Distribution: Ethiopia (Harerge, Sidamo, Bale); Somalia (Hiiraan, Mudug, Shabeellaha Dhexe, Jubbada hoose, Bay, Nugaal, Bari, Woqooyi Galbeed, Gedo, Togdheer, Mijertein, Shebeellaha Hoose); Yemen (Hadhramaut); Socotra .
