Common names: Botswana: Fyndoring (Afrikaans); S. Africa: Horned thorn (English), Horingdoring (Afrikaans). Species characteristics : A medium sized tree to 12 m tall, but often a shrub to 5 m on drier sites, forming a rounded irregular crown. Occurs in woodland and dry thornveld, on clay rich depressions, drainage lines in gravelly open plains and riverine valleys. It can dominate larger areas and form thickets on clay rich soils. It is closely related and can be confused with the A. robusta complex. If found the typically stout and slightly swollen spines distinguish this species from A. robusta. Distribution: Botswana (Central, South Eastern, Kgatleng, Kgalagadi, North East); Mozambique (Limpopo, Maputo, Inhambane); South Africa (Transvaal, Natal, Pilgrims Rest, Zebediela); Swaziland (Manzini, Lubombo, Shiselweni); Zimbabwe (Buhera, Beitbridge, Chiredzi, Chipinge, Chimanimani, Mwenezi).
