Species information
Other NotesCommon names: Brandberg acacia (English), larib (Nama/Damara). Species characteristics : Very distinctive broom-like bush or tree, with many upright stems branching from near its base. Stems are reddish brown when young, which peels off in yellowish strips leaving a rough grey stem when older. Endemic to Northern Namibia, it occurs on rocky ridges, ravines and kloofs. The rocks recorded are either granite such as in the Tsisab gorge on the Brandberg massif or dolomite. It is particularly common in the Brandberg mountains which is referred to in its specific name which means "burnt mountain". It seems to tolerate moderately distrophic conditions found in granite soils. It has a protected status in namibia. Distribution: Namibia: Kaokoland, Damaraland and Omaruru and Outjo districts. Altitude range: 550-1150 m.
