Species information
InterestThe wood is used for implement handles in Chipinge district (Zimbabwe), and the bark is used for stomach complaints. In Angolan forests, cutting the main stem produces a source of drinking water.

Species characteristics : This species grows into a tall woody liane or creeper, climbing up trunks into the crowns of tall rainforest trees. It is one of a few species that occur in the Zaire basin, and forms part of the climbing Acacias which are believed to be the most primitive in the continent. It is a pioneer like many Acacias and exploits forest clearings to establish itself. It specific name refers to its 5 angled stem, it also has indehiscent pods. It is also one of two species that appear to be indigenous both on the continent and in Madagascar. It is common in lowland rainforest but can also be found higher up in wet forest such as Chirinda in the eastern highlands of Zimbabwe.
