Species information

Interest
The wood is hard and beautifully marked, resembling walnut, and used locally in Madagascar for making furniture (Du Puy et al. 2002).

Other Notes
Common names: Somalia: Makon (Gowey), Makon Gawey (Somali); Tanzania: Mpomboo (Bende). Species characteristics: Large tree to 20 m tall (reaching 30 m in Somalia and Madagascar), with a flattened crown. It has prickles in paires which are usually straight or slightly curved, and turgid indehiscent pods. Occurs riverine and riparian forest, and saline water swamp forest. Along the coast it can occur on edges of mangroves. It is closely related to A. tanganyikensis and was previously applied to the specimens that occured inland in central Tanzania. The almost straight prickles distinguish it from its relatives. Distribution: Kenya (Coast, Garissa, Taita, Embu, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu); Somalia (Jubbada Dhexe); Tanzania (Bagamoyo, Korogwe, Tanga, Uzaramo, Lushoto, Rufiji, Morogoro) also ? Mozambique and in Madagascar.
