Species characteristics: Scandent shrub or climber up to 20 m high, or sometimes a small tree thickets, with olive green to grey brown branches. Belongs to the climbing group of Acacias, with scattered prickles arising on darker longitudinal bands along the stem. Leaves are large with a typically humped gland at its base. It has been divided into two varieties, depending on whether the leaflets glabrous except for hairy margins or leaflets hairy underneath. Occurs most frequently in gallery forests and riverine woodland on alluvium, but also away from rivers in high rainfall savannas, scrub and forest margins. Differs from the related climbers A. kamerunensis in larger leaves and wider leaflets, different coloured branches, and larger areoles, and A. erythrocalyx in having glandular branchlets and pods, and seed with larger areoles. Differs from brevispica in having longer petioles although there can be difficulties in seperating some specimens of A. schweinfurthii var. schweinfurthii and A. brevispica ssp. dregeana in south easter Africa. Can form dense impenetrable thickets. Common names: none recorded. Distribution: Mozambique (Tete); Tanzania (Central, Rufiji); Zambia (Luapula); Zimbabwe (Chipinge).
