Allamanda is in honour of Fredrick Allanand (c. 1735- c. 1776), a Swiss botanist, who collected in Surinam c. 1770 and sent seeds of the generic type to Linnaeus. The leaves are a powerful laxative/purgative, and are reported to be used as such in other parts of the world (Politi, 1996).
