Species information

Description
Tree to 25m; prominent stipules encircling stem; blades to 20cm, entire, with 1-3 glands nr base of nerves below, softly hairy below.

Interest
Hibiscus - Gk for marsh mallow, deried also from Ibis, a marsh bird. Introduced, after Hurricane Janet 1955, from Jamaica to help reafforest the Grand Etang area. Endemic in Jamianca and Cuban mountains; can reach 1m diameter, 25m tall, remarkable for a Hibiscus; can suffer die back due to Aluminium; u7sable in c 15 years; A single tree of seaside mahoe 1/2mile from nurseries in jamaica managed to contaminate many batches of seeds sent around the tropics, making low-branhced hybrid forms; Long used in Jamaica for cabinet making; the wood when worked and polisged has a greeen variegated marble colour (Kimber, Econ,. Bot c. 1970, p. 233)

Location
10km E of St. Georges rd to Grenville, 500m W of Gran Etang Forest Reserve Boundary, just E of the Vendome Estate.

Notes
Medium-sized tree to 25m ht and 40-50cm dbh. with upright branching, cultivated in c.45-yr-old plantation. Bark surface rough w very shallow vertical fissures, Slash very soft, fibrous, corky outer layer, 8D (or using Fan 4, 159C), with pink fleck/streak. Flowers solitary, large fleshy, petals bright yellow orange turning reddish. Fruits green. One of the most commonly planted trees in Grenada, valued for its high quality timber.
