Species information

Description
The leaves have tufts of hairs in the axils of the nerves and a characteristic scent when crushed.

Interest
Peru to C.America, now widely cultivated in the tropics. The milky pulp is made into a drink,or the ripe fruit is eaten. The fruit juice can also be used to make ice cream or sorbet. In Africa, leaves are made into a lotion for fever in children and to get rid of bed buds (Dalziel, 1948). Similar uses are recorded for the Caribbean. Tea from young leaves cure fevers and to induce sleep (tea from 9 leaves with 9 avocado leaves is also used for high blood pressure), and the plant is also used against asthma (Politi, 1996).
