Species information

Description
Tree to 15 m; yellowish milky latex; young shoots and stems with paired spines, and sometimes with margin highly dissected, but adult lvs serrated and ragged as if nibbled by insects ; (separate male and female trees). Twig zigzag. Trunk white to yellow brown with yellow buttresses when large. Bark with large powdery lenticels. Fruit globose,c. 1.5 cm , and light green in color. Male flowers are > 3 cm drooping catkins.

Interest
Maclura - honour of William Maclure (1763-1840), American geologist. An important dye plant. The wood yields a yellowish dye called Fustic was once commonly used for dyeing the 'khaki' cloth used in army uniforms.
