The majority of plants curated within the collections at the Botanic Garden and Harcourt Arboretum are angiosperms (flowering seed plants). These plants are divided into three taxonomic groups:
1. The basal angiosperms (including the Magnoliids)
2. The monocots
3. The eudicots
The basal angiosperms are a group which represent the most ancient lineage of flowering plants. It includes plants such as water lilies, magnolias and laurels. Collectivley they represent about 5% of all flowering plant species globally.
